Confessions of a Lover of Books and Learning
Many of us love to read. Some of us who love to read the most are introverts, so I went to the source to find out what its all about.
Theres a great readers survey on TheIntrovertzCoach ( http://www.theintrovertzcoach.com/booksurvey.html ) and yes, Easy Reader that I am, I participated. You're invited to, too!
Here are two things that seem to be true of people who have developed a love of reading:
They were taught to read before they went to school, often by a parent Most couldnt even count the number of books theyve read in a lifetime. One reader wrote, Almost as many drinks of water as Ive taken. Cant begin to guess. Hundreds and thousands seem to be the norm.
When a parent or loved one teaches you to read, its associated with a loving atmosphere.
Many people who love to read tell me that being read to was a regular part of their life as a child.
My father read to me and my sister every night, without fail. The books he chose even my mother had to object to at times Black Arrow, and The Three Musketeers, for instance, but it really didnt matter to me. I loved hearing my fathers voice, and I picked up his obvious love of literature. He approached each reading session with enthusiasm, more in the nonverbals than in anything he said, but certainly I could tell it was something he really looked forward to.
He would pick up the clearly-beloved book, and settle back in the chair, sigh and assume a posture of ahhh, at last. What a wonderful way to transmit a love of learning.
When I was ready to go to college, and was kind of dubious, he told me Id like it a lot more than high school. He said The kids are nicer, and the level of learning is much more enjoyable. You wont have to memorize much.
Those pat phrases reading broadens you and learning enriches your life, were lived in my household. Yes, my father worked. Yes, he did things around the house. Yes, when he settled in to read us a book at night it seemed the part of the day he most looked forward to.
Lifelong learning appears to be one of the qualities that builds our Resilience. Research by Al Siebert, Ph.D., has found that people who live longer, healthier, happier lives have incorporated learning in every stage of their life instead of abandoning learning after college.
One reason I love reading is that its always available. When youre stuck in a traffic jam, or waiting for a late-running soccer practice to end, or getting a prescription filled at the pharmacy, or stuck at work with nothing to do, you can always get on the internet and read, or pull out a book.
Reading and learning are available under most conditions. There were years (before the Internet) when I couldnt afford books and I would go to the public library. There were also used book fairs, and now there are used book stores.
Theres also the used book option at amazon.com, as well as the plethora of free learning material on the Internet. You dont have to spend a cent, and you dont have to leave your house.
Some questions for you about books:

Books are like lobster shells. We surround ourselves with em, then we grow out of em and leave em behind, as evidence of our earlier stages of development. ~Dorothy L. Sayers

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers. ~ Charles W. Eliot
4. If youre living without books, are you missing out on something?

5.Do you value books more than other material possessions?

From mine own library with volumes that
I prize above my dukedome. ~Shakespeare

The rules have changed. True power is held by the person who possesses the largest bookshelf, not gun cabinet or wallet. ~Anthony J. DAngelo

This is a GREAT program. The main screen allows 1 or 2 players, play against the clock, challenge another player, or practice one set at a time (0s, 1s, 2s, etc.). The second screen is a Magic Square (table)from 0 to 12 to help the student find the correct answer, and posts the math family group in upper right-hand corner that will repeat back the equation clicked on. It can be used to solve a problem on the main screen, or as an exercise in itself. It is curious that the Halo 2 soundtrack was broken into two separate CD's in the first place, instead of just the 4 songs from the major bands that weren't part of the game. Speed is what you need when for video editing, big design projects, or managing photo shoots and thats what this drive delivers with FireWire 800 and eSATA connectivity. With our automatic backup capability your creative masterpieces will be backed up the minute you save them.
Customer Review: Backup drive for use with Time Machine
I bought the My Book Studio Edition 500 GB drive specifically for use as a backup drive in conjunction upgrading my IMAC operating system. I installed Leopard and needed a dedicated drive for Time Machine. I've been using it for about a month and there have not been any malfunctions. In fact there have been no surprises. It takes up little room, is quiet enough (though not silent) and was no problem to install. I am completely satisfied.
Customer Review: Works Magic for the Mac
I am speaking about the My Studio 500GB for the Mac. In looking for a good external storage device for regular daily back-up I was guided to all sorts of products. But the My Studio was recommended the most and even was a highly recommended drive from the experts at Apple. The installation was easy (just connect and the software is loaded onto the computer automatically). Keep the software icon in the dock and you are all set. I travel a lot and I use the MacBook Pro (I still use Tiger OS X) and when I get home I simply attach the Firewire 800 (included in the box along with Firewire 400 and a USB cord) and the External Drive updates my backup within seconds. Yes, the initial back-up of the files took about 45 minutes, but then I had a lot of huge files and photos and music on my internal drive. But now, I leave the My Studio plugged into the power outlet and all I need to do is attach the firewire and the external drive turns on and backs up any changes within a minute. I can purge deleted files if I want, but I prefer to keep old files and the 500GB has the room. When I leave, I just quit the software and eject the My Book and it turns off all by itself (don't touch the on/off button; it is all automatic). I highly recommend this to Mac users. Don't get the WD 500GB for the PC even though it says it is good for Mac. You have to reformat the entire Drive and it does not work well with Mac. It costs a little more for the My Studio 500GB for Mac, but the ease of use is well worth it. Thanks Apple for the recommendation!
