Choosing Picture Books for Your Child
Whilst most parents recognize the benefits of introducing their children to books at a young age, the sheer number of books available can make the selection of appropriate titles a daunting task. The following pointers should be considered when buying or borrowing books for your toddler.
Firstly, remember that reading should be fun both for your child and for yourself. The Text should be lively and easy to follow, with only one or two sentences per page, so that the story progresses quickly.
The rhythm of the story is also important. Read a few pages of the story aloud, or at least say them in your head. Stories do not have to be in verse, but should sound light and pleasant, rather than sober or preachy. If written in verse, check that it flows smoothly.
The appearance of the book is also important. Remember, children use the pictures to help them interpret and understand the story. The pictures should be attractive to your child. For most children this means big pictures with bright colors.
Consider buying books which focus on subjects your child is interested in. A truck loving boy may not enjoy a book full of pretty fairy pictures. remember, however, to try to expose your child to different subjects - whilst your truck lover may not come round to fairies, you may be able to interest him/her in dinosaurs.
A common trap to avoid is the presumption that the price of the book is an indication of its quality. There are very many cheap picture books which offer excellent text quality and a great many expensive books which will fail to appeal to toddlers.
Wise selection of books for your toddler can help to foster a love of reading in your child which will last a lifetime.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls Anne Lamotts hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.
Customer Review: Open minded
I enjoyed this book. It is divided in to short sections so it's easy to put down and pick up again. I really liked her accepting attitude. She is open to other religions and cultures. She doesn't force her views on you. The fundamental Christians in my reading group did not like this book at all! Those of us who are more open minded and don't think we have all the answers enjoyed it.

The Secret (Extended Edition)
The Secret (Extended Edition)
Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).
Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini
Customer Review: NEGATIVITY NEVER GOT ANYONE ANYWHERE - Cheesy but WONDERFUL
It can be cheesy - you know the music and the sound bites, but seriously, this is a GREAT DVD to OWN. So some of us may know the secret or think we know it, but it helps to have this DVD on hand to watch to inspire us and remind us of what we have to do, what we are capable of, and how we are the makers of our own destinies. I found it inspiring and although you think things like "Follow Your Bliss" and "You are the designer of your own destiny" may be cheesy or obvious, the messages in THE SECRET are ones that we may think we know, but forget or really don't live by. I watched this online and want to buy the DVD to have on hand to watch at home when I start to get negative and feel defeated. It's funny that this DVD is meant to help people see the positive and forget the negative and these reviewers all focused on the negative. Maybe they should be watching this DVD over and over. Buy it and Watch it over and over!

What a wonderful world it would be.
Ghosts of Onyx (Halo)
Ghosts of Onyx (Halo)
Continuing the saga of the award-winning XboxG game! The Spartan-II program has gone public. Tales of super-soldiers fending off thousands of Covenant attacks have become the stuff of legend. But just how many Spartans are left? While the Master Chief defends a besieged Earth, and the myriad factions of the Covenant continue their crusade to eliminate humanity, an ultrasecret cell of the Office of Naval Intelligence known as 'Section Three' devises a plan to buy the UNSC vital time. They're going to need hundreds of willing soldiers, though . . . and one more Spartan to get the job done. The planet Onyx is virtually abandoned and the perfect place to set this new plan in motion. But when the Master Chief destroys Halo, something is triggered deep within Onyx: Ancient Forerunner technology stirs, and fleets of UNSC and Covenant race to claim it to change the course of the Human-Covenant War.But this reawakened and ancient force may have plans of its own. . . Customer Review: Awsome Prequel to Halo 3
This book was done remarkably well, despite the absense of Master Chief. You really get to know the other Spartans better...almost to the point that you just about tear up when they get mortally wounded. It mentions the civil war going on between the Elites and the rest of the Convenant, but still keeps the Elites in the villian spotlight. The ending of the book was definately NOT what I was expecting, but, given the plots of the 3 games, you shouldn't be too suprised. All in all, it's probably the best book in the series.
Customer Review: Halo, Ghosts of Onix
After reading it twice over I realised it had a few to many cross over plots with the other books. It would have been good to be released with the other three box book set however because it wasnt there are constant references back to different plots. It also introduces a few things that arnt in the other books however should have been and reveals that its been written after and not along side the other series. Overall if you can look past unexplained differences between different technologies and times or if you read it without reading the other three then it has a good plot and delivery of material well timed.
Peter Pan
Peter Pan
Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas
Customer Review: Another classic RE-LIVED!
Peter Pan is a very fun movie. Very childish happenings. Tinkerbell is a classic assistant actress and is very selfish, mean-spirited and in love with Peter Pan. So when another tries to get close (namely girls like Wendy) she will not take to this lightly! Just watch and see!
It's a story that's been told a thousand times but if you're a Disney fan, this HAS to be relived!!
Peter Pan comes to John and Michael's nursery once in a while just to see how things are. He inspires the children to play and imitate Peter Pan and the Captain Hook, and Wendy, to keep the stories alive.
Neverland is any 6 or 7 year old kid's fantasy world, but ANYONE can relive the glory that is Peter Pan.
I don't wanna spend the whole night writing this review but I will just say that it holds brilliance; magic and such and should not be ignored! Get your copy tonight and make the children in your life smile over and over!
Favorite characters: Peter Pan, Michael, Tinkerbell and the Fox boy. :)

Customer Review: Peter Pan best DVD yet
Being a big Peter Pan fan (I saw it in the theater when it was first released back in 1952) and love this DVD. Great clean up and restoration of the film yet, plus lots of goodies. Great DVD and worth every penny for the Peter Pan Fan.

With 40 Years Of X-Men DVD, you've got a full collection of every X-Men story published in the last four decades. Almost 500 issues of the classic X-Men comics are reproduced here, from the very first issue in 1963 to August 2005 -- all in full color, from cover to cover. Explore a world where a small group of people are born with genes that give them super-powers. These "mutants" are hated and feared by humanity at large, and the X-Men come together to protect both mutants and human from prejudice and evil mutants alike. You'll get to follow their incredible adventures as they span four amazing decades.
Customer Review: A perfect gift for the comic book fan who has almost everything
My husband loved this as a gift. He is a long-time comic book fan and this gave him an opportunity to read some of the very first editions that are way before his time. They look amazing on the computer, plus you can print if you want. (with 15,000+ pages I can't imagine why you'd want to) I was concerned about Mac compatibility, but since the thing is just a PDF interface, you just need Acrobat, no special Windows-only software. We're looking to pick up the Spiderman collection next.
Customer Review: Nice read
It is just as it says. A pdf scan of all comics. It's really neat to read some of these again. Great value and good entertainment.
OBD-II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes Techbook)
OBD-II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes Techbook)
This Haynes Techbook manual introduces the DIYer to OBD-II: what it is, what it isn't, and how it works. Includes information on basic troubleshooting, computer controlled systems, OBD-II monitors, trouble code retrieval, diagnostic routines and component replacement procedures. Haynes Techbook Manuals is a series of comprehensive manuals gives the home mechanic an in-depth look at specific areas of auto repair. Each manual offers easy-to-follow text plus hundreds of hands-on photos.
Customer Review: OBD II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes)
This book is easy reading and comprehensive. It covers all of the OBD II diagnostic codes for the majority of auto builders. I've found it to be very helpful in diagnosing vehicles with the check engine light on.
Customer Review: OBD-II insight
The book is quite useful to help one understand how the OBD-II system works. It may not solve your current problem, but at least you will have some idea of what causes the "service engine" light to come on and sometimes go off. It makes no bones about the fact that some problems are difficult to solve.

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Talibans backyard
Anyone who despairs of the individuals power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistans treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schoolsespecially for girlsthat offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortensons quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.
Customer Review: A MUST READ!
Truly inspiring. I'm trying to think of how to get our country's leaders to read this amazing book. It spoke to me, as I have long believed that terrorism must be fought with education, giving people of the world hope and the means to achieve a better life. I hope that all the others who have reviewed this book have been moved to make a contribution to this very worthy cause, as I have!
Customer Review: A "must-read"
This book is a "must read" for anyone who is serious about trying to understand what is happening (and what can happen) in the name of promoting peace in the world. This book is well-written and significant.
Apple MacBook Pro MA896LL/A 15" Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive)
Apple MacBook Pro MA896LL/A 15" Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive)
Stylishly and intelligently designed for mobile professionals, Apple's MacBook Pro gets a serious speed bump with the new, powerful Intel chipset (dubbed Santa Rosa), which provides a faster Core 2 Duo processor, longer battery life, and native support for 802.11n wireless connectivity. This model (MA896LL/A) also includes a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display measuring 15.4 inches and a state-of-the art NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card for more realistic graphics for animation and gaming. This MacBook Pro is powered by the new 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 processor and 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 memory--the fastest portable computer memory currently on the market (June 2007). But some things haven't changed: the trademark stunning aluminum enclosure that's is just one-inch thin, built-in iSight video camera, and Apple's magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter, which safely disconnects when under strain.
This MacBook Pro measures just 1 inch thin and weighs 5.4 pounds. |
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
The Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor has a 2.2 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an enormous 4 MB of Smart Cache, an L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts
The new 15-inch MacBook Pro offers a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display with an antiglare finish that's perfect for color-minded professionals. |
The 15.4-inch widescreen TFT (non-glossy) display offers a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and an antiglare widescreen display that's perfect for color-minded professionals. The new MacBook Pro display is backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), which gives it a lighter weight and more power efficiency than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ. It's also better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display.
Video and graphics are powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card, which is boosted by 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications. The GeForce 8600M GT brings a new level of realism to the MacBook Pro with its 16-lane PCI Express architecture, 16x full screen anti-aliasing, 128-bit High Dynamic Range rendering, and a texture fill rate of up to 8.2 billion per second.
Hard Drive and Memory
The 160 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough space to store business-related documents and presentations, as well as offers space for a large digital audio and video library. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1 GB) have an industry-leading 667 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to a whopping 4 GB.
Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.
Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.
Apple Innovations
The magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the cord or the MacBook Pro, if you trip over the cord.. |
Using two-fingered scrolling, you can easily scroll around your documents or open contextual menus with one hand. |
The MacBook Pro has battery life that rivals most notebooks in its class. If you'd like to make that battery last even longer, Mac OS X has a few tricks up its sleeve. Go to System Preferences, click Energy Saver, and change battery optimization from Normal to Better Battery Life. Or tell MacBook Pro to reduce its screen brightness and give yourself a little more time untethered.
And with the included Apple Remote and Front Row software, you can show off your latest photos and access your iTunes music and playlists from across the room. You can also use it to watch downloaded movies and TV episodes as well as control playback of DVD movies. The Apple Remote features a minimalist six buttons--just press the Menu button to activate Front Row and begin to navigate through your media. Customer Review: MacBook Pro
The MacBook Pro is great, looks great and works well. The only thing is the new operating system wasn't loaded to the laptop but the disk was included. Other than that, everything is great. Love it.
Customer Review: MacBook Pro
I bought this computer one month ago and the price has dropped $305! I bought an Apple for its reputation as a reliable system. This one crashes regularly, especially when I attempt to use the help function. Also, it does not pick up wireless signals unless they are very, very strong. My six-year old Toshiba works better than this machine. Definitely not worth the premium paid.

Now, this does not mean that I will never send my kids to any kind of group activity with kids their own age, or that I will never let them be influenced by other adults.

After reading some of the responses to my book review on Family Driven Faith, and rereading my original post, I feel the need to clarify a few things: 1) Let me just say that I still agree wholeheartedly with his philosophy as far as families worshipping together. Now, this does not mean that I will never send my kids to any kind of group activity with kids their own age, or that I will never let them be influenced by other adults. I’m not sure how Baucham’s church operates, but when Clay and

I don’t like beer but I’ll still show you my husband’s beer can collection.

This is Peg. And I’ve taken on a new personality. I am the wife who doesn’t like beer but is showing off her husband’s beer can collection, anyway. And that doesn’t necessarily mean he likes beer, but he does. I have a real good one for the first day. It kind of describes how I feel about beer. Do you believe in the sayings “Beer is beer!” or “Any beer is good beer”? Then this one is looking pretty mouthwatering right now huh? ( I don’t care what the can looks like! I’d have to be pre
