The Place and Future of Electronic Books

THE PLACE AND FUTURE OF ELECTRONIC BOOKS

by Craig Lock
http://www.craiglockbooks.com

Just sharing a few thoughts on the place of E-books in today's world.
I believe ebook publishing is the way of the future (as shown
by Steven King's "Riding the Bullet"), though I believe there
will always be a place for traditional publishing with paper
books. People will always love holding a real book out in the
sun for their holiday reading. I just believe electronic-publishing
is way cheaper and immediate compared to "hard copy"
publishing. Thus it has many benefits for the reading consumer,
as well as talented new authors, who may find great difficulty in
getting their work accepted by traditional publishing houses-
especially the well-known ones who rarely take on new authors
in the current harsh publishing environment.
In addition, things are moving so fast with reading aids in
electronic publishing. New technology is constantly developing
the hand-held reader, so soon you may be able to down-load
novels at the beach.

May the two forms of publishing work in tandem in the future,
to the benefit of the consumer. In time all of Craig Lock's 17
books will be available both electronically, as well as paper
copies.

We have an ultimate vision (or dream) of Gisborne on the
East Coast of the North Island of scenic and tranquil New
Zealand being a "renowned and recognised" centre of electronic,
as well as conventional publishing, a world-renowned centre
in providing quality courses in distance education and adult
online teaching. perhaps one day even a centre of excellence
in developing technology in the South Pacific.
(Thanks to my "technogeek" associates, Stefan Van Lingen, Bill
and Erich for all their help, drive, talent and vision, as I don't
understand much of modern technology).

We believe an idea, a big helping of enthusiasm, together
with a great deal of time and effort in implementing it, belief,
faith in yourself and persistence (not necessarily in that
order) is the key to marketing success and seeing a vision
turn into reality.

That is our ultimate vision and something we at Eagle Productions
in association with Bill Rosoman of Nugrow Technologies here
in Poverty Bay (oops er sorry, Eastland) and Stefan Van Lingen
of Gauteng, South Africa are daily striving towards with all our
energies and creative endeavours.

you can first celebrate the Independance Day of the strong
burning creative spirit that is within you. If set alight, it is a
flame that will burn brightly and make your personal VISION

Mulan (1998)

Mulan (1998)
Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor.

The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

Customer Review: External Hard Drive

The Western Digital 2.0 GB external hard drive is great. It backs up my computer automatically every night with tons or room to spare to download music, movies, etc. I highly recommend this hard drive.

Customer Review: Ticking Time Bomb

I received this drive for Christmas. It lasted two and a half months of light use before failing inexplicably. Blinking front indicator light, but the drive won't spin up and no computer I connect it to will recognize it. The day before it worked fine. Tech support was unhelpful, and I'm loathe to exchange the unit for another from the manufacturer. The drive is sealed inside the plastic shell, making removal difficult. I would not use this drive for anything valuable, it's cheaply made and untrustworthy.

The Passion of the Christ

The Passion of the Christ
The Passion of the Christ focuses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life. The film begins in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus must resist the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death.

Customer Review: AWSOME!

I think Mel did a great job!

This is how they treated him...this is what he had to do for us....

this is how much he loved us. Everyone in the audience applauded in the resurrection scene, ths stone rolled back and he walked out.

Everybody that saw this movie should shout & praise..

"JESUS, the messiah, king of kings..the alpha and omega"

Customer Review: YES, IT IS A DEVESTATING EXPERIENCE

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is perhaps the most talked about movie in the history of film. Other films have been condemned, discussed, dissected and more. But this film has received more anger ridden controversy than the last movie about Christ to do so, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST. And is the controversy worth noting? Perhaps. But some of it is nothing more than the rants of people who never saw the film. The film does deserve to be seen and discussed.

For anyone living in a cave over the past few years, the movie focuses on the last day in the life of Jesus Christ (Jim Caviezel). It opens with his praying on his last night in the garden and moves quickly forward to his betrayal by Judas and subsequent torture and persecution by anyone with power at the time.

A sect of Jews led by Caiphas found Jesus to be a threat to their power base. In response, they set out to have him destroyed. More than destroying his following, they actually wanted him wiped off of the face of the Earth. And they set out to do so. This has caused some to consider the film anti-Semitic. The fact of the matter was there were two choices of the people involved to crucify Christ at that time: the Jewish leaders or the Roman leaders. History has shown that it was the Jewish leaders that called for his demise. Plus the fact is that Jesus himself was a Jew. It is not anti-Semitic to state this. It is merely history. And for those who believe, there was no other option for those leaders if God's plan was to be followed through.

The movie proceeds to show the physical persecution of Jesus from there forward. When he is arrested and transported to the temple, he is beaten with the chains that bind him. When he is in the temple and accused, he is beaten by the mob. All of this is disturbing in its own right. But things get progressively worse.

Taken to Pilate so that he might put Jesus to death, Pilate opts for the political ploy of sending him to Herod, the king of Jesus land of birth, to judge him. Herod sends him back. Pilate caves but not completely, ordering Jesus to be punished but not put to death. And this is where the truly brutal point of the film begins.

Jesus is taken to the guards for scourging. For those who do not know, this is when Jesus was beaten. Many times we have heard about Jesus being whipped, lashed or beaten. But never has it been this graphically portrayed. The guards taunt Jesus and are presented as sadistic oafs. They begin with reed like canes and when that doesn't offer enough damage, when Jesus continues to rise, they switch to a cat-o-nine tails type whip, tipped with pieces of glass. These cut into Jesus' flesh, ripping him apart like so much meat. When finished, the stones surrounding Jesus are covered in blood.

Throughout the grueling punishment that Jesus receives, his mother Mary is witness. She sees the torturous treatment that her son receives. She sees the pain and anguish he is going through. And she conveys on her face the pain that she is suffering along with him.

Near death, Jesus is once again taken to Pilate. Still unwilling to condemn this man to death, he turns the matter over to the people who call out for his demise. Broken and bloodied, Jesus is forced to carry his own cross to be crucified on. Shredded beyond belief, he does so, faltering several times along the way, at one point requiring assistance.

The final act of the film offers perhaps the most realistic glimpse of what those who were crucified had to endure. It is painful to watch. Director Mel Gibson never lets go of the viewer's throat, forcing you to witness the pain that Jesus, Gibson's representation of God on Earth, went through. And it leaves you wasted by the film's end.

There is no way that a person of faith, a person who believes in God and Jesus can walk away from this film untouched. The images are seared into your mind. Although I do not attend church, I believe in God and Jesus. And as I watched, beginning with the scourging, I found myself crying. Sure I had heard that people were doing this. I was prepared to control myself while watching. But as the film progressed, I cried several times, unable to stop and never feeling ashamed of it. This movie can affect you as strongly as this.

From a technical standpoint, the movie is very well made. The photography is well done, the story told plainly and simply and the direction done so as to not make you notice. It was Gibson's passion with his belief in Christ that made this film a reality. He has taken much heat from the Hollywood community for bringing his vision to life. It has been said that he may never work in Hollywood again. If that were possible, it would be their loss, not his.

The movie opened big, making more money than anyone could ever have expected by a movie of this sort of topic. It caused more discussion of religion and belief than any movie that I can ever recall. And perhaps, even though he has suffered the slings and arrows of an impartial press and industry, perhaps it was worth it. Because at the end of the day, Gibson was able to make people think once again about God. And that is an accomplishment in itself.

I highly recommend that everyone see this film. It will touch you no matter what you believe. If it doesn't, then you have no feelings inside.

Magic

Magic
Magic, Bruce Springsteen's new studio recording and his first with the E Street Band in five years, is set for release by Columbia records on October 2, 2007. Produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, the album features eleven new Springsteen songs and was recorded at southern tracks recording studio in Atlanta, Ga.

Customer Review: Not the old Springsteen "magic"

I have been a Bruce Springsteen fan for more than 20 years and own most of his music. I saw him in 1985 during the Born in the USA tour and consider that show to be the best live concert I've ever attended.

I pre-ordered Magic based on comments by Springsteen's manager that this album echoed the Boss's work of the 1970's. Having listened through the album several times, I do not agree with that assessment. I agree with many others that some of the lyrics are hard to understand. For a person like Springsteen who has something to say about life in our times, I think the words matter. Many of the songs aim for the good-time feel of some of Springsteen's earlier work with the obligatory Clarence Clemon's solos and fine keyboard work by Roy Bittan, but they don't have much to say.

The highlights for me are the buoyant "Livin' in the Future" and the wry cover song "Magic," both subtle damnations of the policies of the "Current Occupant." I admire Springsteen for putting his reputation and career on the line to say what needs to be said in this day and age of people who will crucify you for speaking against those currently in power. But he should have made sure the final mix of the songs put those words out front.

I wanted to like this album. Despite repeated listens, I can't get very excited about it as a whole, although I do really like a couple of the songs.

Customer Review: Magic

Bruce Springsteen & The E. Street Band-Magic *****

When you get right down to it, the bare basic rock n' roll, strip all the country leanings, the ol' dixie influence of albums past, the self-indulgent pop that went against everything you set out to do, and you have Magic, Springsteens most honest and true to form albums in years. Magic might be the very best album Springsteen ever released, rivaling that of even U.S.A., Darkness On The Edge Of Town, and even the legendary Born To Run. While it might not be as theme concious as those albums it does do something remarkable. Magic is a career spanning album, it has something from all that fasits of his career. Lour Arena rockers, Politicaly charged anthems, country hinged melodys, Bob Dylan meets Jack Kerouack lyrics, and a backing of one of Americas greatest rock bands, The E. Street Band.

Opening with one of their all time greatest songs, 'Radio Nowhere' comes across as a plea by way of a neutron bomb. Homming some of his best lyrics and some of the E. Street Bands best grooves. 'You'll Be Coming Down' is what they wish they would have accomplished with The Rising.'Livin' In The Future' would have fit perfectly with The River, and gives vision to what everyone wishes they could say sometimes, "We're living in the future, and none of this has happened yet." 'Girls In Their Summer Clothes' is one of the best songs the band has ever recorded reminding us of early Springsteen. 'Last To Die' is easily the best anti-war-in-Iraq song to ever come along. While the 'Long Walk Home' may just be the best to come along in the last ten years from anyone, one that truly has to be heard to fully appreciate.

Magic is the album we have all been waiting for, one that we almost got with The Rising, but just came up short. Magic is easily the best Springsteen album since U.S.A., and maybe of their entire career.

Publishing Special Reports And Ebooks At No Cost Debbie La

So you'd like to start publishing special reports and ebooks to use as marketing tools and to sell as products. But you have no budget to get this new venture going. Here's a tip to help you get up and running at no cost.

The traditional route to publishing digital products is to purchase software designed specifically for creating PDFs, such as Adobe Acrobat.

But there is another option that won't cost you a dime. Use free PDF-making software available on the web.

If you don't mind seeing a few ads every time you create a PDF, I recommend using PDF995. You can download their free software at http://www.pdf995.com and use it to create PDF formats of all your ebooks and special reports, or any other files that you'd like to convert to PDF format.

Once you have installed the free software, you simply print the documents you would like to convert, and select PDF995 as the destination printer. And, voila! Your file has been converted.

Be sure to also download their PDF Edit and Signature software to take advantage of their editing and security functions. I have been using PDF995 for months and I love it. It is simple and easy to use, and best of all, it doesn't cost a dime!

LeapFrog LittleTouch LeapPad Educational Book: Pooh Loves You!
One of a library of interactive books that play on LeapFrog's Little Touch LeapPad, Pooh Loves You! teaches babies important social skills, such as sharing and using good manners, and reinforces numbers and shapers—all under the gentle guidance of lovable Winnie the Pooh. The book and cartridge snap easily into the LeapPad. With three settings to choose from, parents can adjust the book to play at the appropriate pace for their child. Babies can listen to musical rhythms and sounds to stimulate early brain development while 1-1/2 to 2-years olds are ready to hear short phrases to teach word-object association and development of early language skills. The final setting prepares older toddlers for preschool by playing rhymes and building skills in sequence memorization and following directions. To get started, children must touch the "Go" circle on each new page. (Smaller babies will require an adult's help). Kids can sit back and listen or touch anything on the page to hear a letter sound or have an object identified. Some pages also have a honey pot icon, which plays a song when touched, and a light bulb icon, which begins an interactive learning activity when activated. The book's fabric pages are water-repellant and tear-resistant, making it impossible for even the toughest little hands to destroy it. --Cristina Vaamonde

These chilton books really annoy me because when the repair gets ugly, they always state something like, "please take your vehicle to an authorized repair shop". Also, the particular book Amazon sent me had my year/make/model wiring diagram torn out of it. WTF? By the time I discovered this, the return deadline had passed. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? Game

Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? Game
Class is in session with the "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" board game--based on the Fox Television game show. Kids can compete with adults while grownups experience the fun in realizing how much they've forgotten since elementary school.

Customer Review: Questions Portions - Great Design & Great Fun, Rest Makes No Sense

The TV show is fun for the whole family and the questions portion of the game is great fun - it's rare to find a game that both a 4-year old, an 8-year old and adults can all enjoy - since they did a real nice job of dividing out the questions by age group and it's hilarious for adults to try to remember what a denominator is :-)

Of course, as a board game, you cannot replicate a panel of kids as your "help" buddies but the way they came up with a substitute gmaeplay makes very little sense. They should have kept the game nice and simple instead of trying to re-invent the TV experience and failing. So, like most people, I think you'll invent new rules for your family - it would be pointless & complicated to explain how they want you to play this game but again, you can skirt around and stick to the questions and just hand out the money prizes.

The questions are divided by grade group and then by color and the questions are great. They are all a good test of knowledge from ages 4-10 but it is for kids who like retaining knowledge and um, smart - because if they don't love reading, studying, math, history, geography, etc ... this is not really that easy of a game as they have to pull out paper and do math problems and spell and so forth but smart kids will love it as they get to show off so know the kids who you are buying this for ...

And it's fun for families as there are definitely things that your 3rd grader will have just learned but you cannot remember anymore :-)

But you will have to make up your own gameplay rules as the design of the game itself makes very little sense or rather, it's way more complicated than it has to be when they could've just simply substituted moving pieces up & down a row or something to indicate progress in the game ... so, questions - smart, and concept - great. As a gameboard, poorly thought out but you can easily make your own family rules ... and you will rapidly run out of question/answer cards though - hope they add new answer packs quickly.

A great family game and fun play for smart kids.

Customer Review: Great....if you only want one person to have a turn!

The rules for this game are ridiculous. As mentioned in another review, you really need to make up your own rules in order to make this a game for everyone to enjoy. We bought this as a family game, but the questions are just too simple for adults. We have played twice by the traditional rules; both times it was easy to reach the million dollar question without the other parent/sibling team getting a chance to go. Very disappointing for kids! I gave this a two-star rating because there is a lot of new trivia that the kids can learn from the question cards. I wouldn't recommend this toy unless it's offered at a significant discount off the retail price.

40 Years of the X-Men

40 Years of the X-Men
With 40 Years Of X-Men DVD, you've got a full collection of every X-Men story published in the last four decades. Almost 500 issues of the classic X-Men comics are reproduced here, from the very first issue in 1963 to August 2005 -- all in full color, from cover to cover. Explore a world where a small group of people are born with genes that give them super-powers. These "mutants" are hated and feared by humanity at large, and the X-Men come together to protect both mutants and human from prejudice and evil mutants alike. You'll get to follow their incredible adventures as they span four amazing decades.

Customer Review: A perfect gift for the comic book fan who has almost everything

My husband loved this as a gift. He is a long-time comic book fan and this gave him an opportunity to read some of the very first editions that are way before his time. They look amazing on the computer, plus you can print if you want. (with 15,000+ pages I can't imagine why you'd want to) I was concerned about Mac compatibility, but since the thing is just a PDF interface, you just need Acrobat, no special Windows-only software. We're looking to pick up the Spiderman collection next.

Customer Review: Nice read

It is just as it says. A pdf scan of all comics. It's really neat to read some of these again. Great value and good entertainment.

Expansion Pak For Nintendo 64

Expansion Pak For Nintendo 64
The Expansion Pak allows the random access memory (RAM) of the Nintendo 64 console to increase from 4 megabytes (MB) to 8 MB of contiguous main memory. With the help of an included key, the Expansion Pak fits into the slot that is below a removable panel on the top of the N64 console. Game developers can take advantage of the increased memory in several ways, including making games that are more visually appealing. Some games will allow players to choose a "high-resolution" option, increasing the screen resolution from 320 by 240 pixels to as much as 640 by 480 pixels--creating crisp, high-definition graphics. The Expansion Pak utilizes Nintendo 64's capability for 32-bit, 16.7-million-color display with 256 levels of transparency (alpha)--bringing your games to a new level of realism. Instead of reusing texture data, games can buffer a larger number of textures for a more distinct look.

Other ways for developers to utilize the larger memory is by setting a higher frame rate, longer replays, and more animations. Games also can have more sophisticated artificial intelligence, which allows computer-controlled characters to be smarter, literally. Games can offer more characters and vehicles, and contain larger, more complex levels and worlds. Some games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask require the Expansion Pak, while others such as Perfect Dark require it for access to all of the game's levels and features. See our list of Nintendo 64 games that take advantage of the Expansion Pak's extra power.

Customer Review: A nice inexpensive way to enhance visual clarity on an aged console

The Nintendo 64 memory expansion pak upgrade is not vital for the most part, in terms of plugging up and playing many of the great titles already released for this console. But there are a few titles that absolutely require this upgrade. The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64 are two such titles for example, that cannot be accessed without this upgrade. Perfect Dark is one such title which offers minimal gameplay and locks players out of many of it's richer features due to the lack of available memory to run all of it's features properly. But I think you'll find that even if Donkey kong 64, Perfect dark, or Zelda Majora's Mask isn't your thing, you'll still be wanting to consider purchasing this Ram expansion for a few key reasons.

1)Improved gameplay details. A lot of games weather you know this or not offer very fine gameplay oriented details not available without extended memory. Most games are capable of improved framerate (improves quality of onscreen action. Prevents slow down effects when a lot of on screen action is occuring for example.) Programers can implement more textures and details to environments and characters making things look more lively or life like. AI (artificial intelligence) can be improved and become "smarter".

2) The second drastic improvement is audio/visual quality. Most people that don't understand how computer games really work or don't know all the technical terms, have a commen misconception that this expansion pak is supposed to improve the graphics in a way that might take the console beyond it's 64 bit capabilities. This isn't true. Rather, the expansion pak improves color quality and helps to reduce the blurry effect of the colors in most games, creating better visual clarity. Much of the blocky character sprites (but not all of course) will appear smooth and less blockish or choppy. With the improved framerate you may even notice how the environment in some games can pan out further while maintaining a smooth look, allowing the player to see further away from the character than they could with the jumper pak.

...The memory expansion for N64 is relatively cheap now that the console itself is two generations removed behind Gamecube and Wii. And if your still into retro gaming or just enjoy playing the Nintendo 64 even after all these years I would certainly recommend this buy. Even if you never play the games which require the upgrade, I would consider this because of it's ability to enhance visual clarity. Couple the memory expansion up with a Video-S cable, and you will still find an appeal to the outdated graphics of a system of yore.

Customer Review: Works well for my Mac!

My main concern was this was going to be a PC centric bag with no thought for the Mac. Well, it fits my Macbook Pro just perfectly and safely. I can store all the extras in the outside pocket and have plenty of room for incidentals, as well as have the other side for paperwork I don't want to be turned into premature recyclable pulp. My only wish was they had a genuine Brown, non-dyed version. I could find no other manufacturer making a nicer model in natural color so this seemed to be the best bet. I've had it for a while now and it's been working out just fine.

Customer Review: great case

I received the notebook case in just a few days from my order and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the case. The service was excellent and I would by from this vendor again.

Audio Books For Ipods: Pros And Cons

Audio Books For Ipods: Pros And Cons

Submitted By: Bob Pardue

The audio books market has taken a turn recently toward audio books for iPods. With iPod products becoming so popular, many audio book companies are realizing the tremendous opportunity of using iPods to store and distribute audio books.

Let's take a look at how this works along with some pros and cons of developing audio books for iPods.

How do iPods Work for Audio Books?

Audio books are simply books that are spoken and then stored on an audio cassette tape or compact disk (CD). Those who lack the time or ability to read books often find audio books to be very enjoyable.

Children enjoy listening to their stories read aloud by audio book. They make great baby-sitters in the car while taking long family trips. Also, those traveling alone can enjoy a good book while driving. It's a great way to read without actually "reading!"

The iPod Stampede

Electronics consumers have been rushing out to get the latest technology called "iPods." Why? Because iPods have revolutionized the way audio is stored. Ipods are smaller than CD players, but can hold far more audio data.

Consumers can store their favorite music from many CDs onto one iPod unit. This saves time and storage space!

iPod owners can take their music or book on iPod with them wherever they go. Whether it's in the car, while taking a walk or bike ride, hiking, boating, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Pros of Creating Audio Books for iPods

There are many pros of creating audio books for iPods such as making more than one book available on one iPod player, providing an easy way to read books for those with a busy time schedule, and allowing children to listen to their favorite stories.

Many libraries are now offering iPod audio books on rental as they become more popular. This will save space and reduce maintenance costs. Books on tape usually require many tapes for one book. Books on CD reduced this to several CDs. With iPods, and entire book can fit into one file.

Another advantage is audio book files can be downloaded online from any computer. Public domain books are usually available at no charge.

Cons of Creating Audio Books for iPods

Though iPods can certainly make life easier for bookworms and music lovers there are a few disadvantages to creating audio books for iPods. iPods are still fairly new.

With any new technology, there will be many changes and "improvements" over the years to help quality, add features, increase memory, etc. iPods are still fairly expensive. Each year will offer new iPod technology that's better than the year before. So, consumers should be prepared to spend more dollars on new improved iPods to stay ahead.

Another disadvantage is that not all books are available for iPod just yet. So, it might be difficult to find some audio books.

To sum it up, audio books for iPods can provide great entertainment for those who love to read. And, as they become more popular, iPods will likely become more affordable for everyone.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

Customer Review: Open minded

I enjoyed this book. It is divided in to short sections so it's easy to put down and pick up again. I really liked her accepting attitude. She is open to other religions and cultures. She doesn't force her views on you. The fundamental Christians in my reading group did not like this book at all! Those of us who are more open minded and don't think we have all the answers enjoyed it.

Customer Review: I can't even finish this book!!

Customer Review: Act 2007 works FAST and FINE with right system.

I ordered ACT 2007 (got a great price on 2007 vs 2008. Shop around). After buying, I read all the negative reviews and figured I was in the deep stuff. However, I found quite the opposite.

As a background - I converted 6500 contacts from Goldmine using conversion software. I left GM because it is not supported any longer and was getting a little paranoid about the consequences of major problems.

Of course there were some duplications and minor errors in the conversion but nothing major. There is also a learning curve for a new user and some quirks as with any program. However, the format is much, much more user friendly for a smaller company (4 users) than is GM.

The major concern to others seems to be speed. Not for us. We are on a peer to peer XP network. We keep one machine dedicated to data storage with no users on it. We did update to all new Dell Vostro and Optiplex machines with 2.0 GHZ or better and a minimum of 1 GB RAM, 80 GB drives. The response from the ACT program is instantaneous. I do not know if the speed problems everyone is complaining about is a function of old slow equipment, converting from prior versions, slow network, or what. Our ACT is fast.

Now I have to admit the manual is crap (aren't they all?). For the first time in 20 years I subscribed to a support contract. I suspected that it would be a lot cheaper with a new and fairly complicated program than beating my head against the wall trying to figure out those little quirks. I was right. I have already recouped the $200 cost with a couple of phone calls. The quality and courtesy surprised me. The contract covers 13 months for less than the price of one license at retail. And as a bonus, you get to talk to real live Americans who actually know something about the program. (Listen up HP. I don't want to talk to India). I also bough ACT for Dummies. Very useful book so far.

I wonder if anyone doing exactly the same as we did has the same concerns about speed as some of the other reviewers. I gave 5 it stars so people would see that the program is not the junk others are calling it. However because of the manual it really should be 4.5 stars.

Customer Review: Avoid a heart attack, just don't buy it.

Buying Sage Act! 2007 is one of the most stupid things I did on my career.

It simply doesn't work.

And if you want to contact the company for help, you have to pay $200+ for a customer service plan.

The email function it has collapsed 2 times in about 6 months, making me lose tons of valuable information and time.

Sage simply steal my money.

Avoid frustrations like mine and other thousand of users, just get another solution from another company.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire brings back Harry, Ron, and Hermione for more adventure! Harry is mysteriously selected as the fourth contestant in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament. Each competitor in the international competition must confront a fire-breathing dragon, rescue friends from the icy depths of the Black Lake, and navigate the twisting mysteries of a vast, dangerous maze. It may sound difficult, but Harry is older, wiser and more skilled now. Still, even he isn't ready for another show with the evil Lord Voldemort himself!

Customer Review: Controls not explained!

Let me start off with the good things:

-the graphics are phenomenal

-you can choose your character

Now, the bad things:

-unlike the other HP games, you CANNOT wander around the Hogwarts grounds, which I enjoyed.

-The mouse has NO action whatsoever, not even in the main menu!

-I get stuck on so many levels, because most controls are NOT EXPLAINED! Not even in the manual!

-your "friends" (whoever you're not playing with) are so slow in following you and are almost always occupied with sneezing or wandering around when you need help so badly!

-I tried to install this game for one full year and never got it to install until I did some tricky things

Overall, I would have rated this game five stars if the bad things were fixed.

I think that EA Games was just porting over a Play Station game (I can tell by the graphics style) and not bothering to make it anymore convenient. EA did a poor job here. I would sort of recommend this game.

Customer Review: The worst. Period.

I LOVED the first four (SS, CoS, TPoA, and QWC) games.

The first one was a little too easy (I beat it in three days after some practice), the second one being a bit too hard (I have a fear of fire snails), the Third one and Quiddich World Cup being perfect.

When I bought the first game I was expecting another GREAT game. But here is what I got: graphics that were grainy, NO exploring, and no fun trunks with goodies. it was a HARD game, and i'm still stuck on the second task. I can't believe I decided to buy PetVet later because I wanted this. Here's hoping you can explore in the fifth one.

    The Virtues Of Audio Books

    Submitted By: Larry Christopher

I first got into the audio books habit working at a temporary data entry job. One of the few benefits to engaging in such a mundane task all day is the ability to wear headphones. Listening to the same pop songs hour after hour quickly becomes almost as tedious as silence, so I started to borrow books on tape from the library. While listening to a book may seem like a serious distraction, I ?along with many others at my place of employment- learned that even a brain of average capacity can swiftly adapt to the dual tasks of keying names and numbers and following the twists and turns of a plot.

Since then, I have come to appreciate the experience of listening to books. Many people take them on long drives. While I haven?t had many occasions to do this, I can appreciate the companionship a book would provide on a long, solitary journey. I have, however, found other good uses for them. They make an excellent accompaniment to certain kinds of exercise. I?m not a jogger, but since I see many people running down the street or through parks with headphones on, it?s a fairly safe assumption some are listening to books rather than music. Ditto with treadmills at health clubs (or at home). You can also listen while cooking, cleaning up or other household tasks, so long as there are no loud noises in the background (like a vacuum cleaner). If a book is especially engaging, you can, of course, simply listen to it while doing nothing else.

Since I started listening to audio books, about ten years ago, there has been a great increase in their popularity. Formats have also changed. While tapes are still available, CDs started to replace them as the favored format several years ago. Now, with the mp3 revolution, downloads seem to be the wave of the future. Regardless of the format, however, the experience is pretty much the same. I actually prefer tapes to CDs (I still don?t have an mp3 player ?I tend to be one of the last holdouts when it comes to new technology; I got my first DVD player only a couple of years ago, long after VHS became almost obsolete), because they are simpler to start and stop.

What are the best kinds of audio books to listen to? It depends, of course, on your tastes. Suspense and mystery novels seem to be the easiest to locate, though you can also find nonfiction (everything from self-help to history), classics and instructional programs (such as foreign languages). One rule I have with audio books is that I almost never get anything that is abridged. This is especially true for fiction. I really don?t understand the rationale behind abridged novels. Is it to save time? Yet, most people who purchase or rent audio books are doing so in order to fill time, so why skimp on the length? As I see it, any novel that would not be seriously diminished by abridgement is not worth reading in the first place (either printed or audio). Even genre fiction is ruined by abridgement. Often, mysteries and action plots, for example, are fairly complex. I am lucky if I can keep up with what?s going on in a full length spy novel; cut out some of the exposition and ?minor? scenes, and I am completely lost. One exception to this rule might be nonfiction in a genre in which I am not particularly interested in general. For example, I might conceivably listen to an abridgement of somebody?s ten volume history of the Roman Empire. In this case, I?d probably never get around to reading the whole thing, and since it isn?t a specialty of mine, I don?t mind missing some of the finer points. In general however, in case I haven?t made this clear by now, abridgement is close to sacrilege where books are concerned.

There is a certain kind of literary snob who does not consider audio books real books. By his or her criterion, if you?ve listened to a book, you haven?t ?really? read it. We could argue the semantics of whether listening to a book can be literally called ?reading? or not, but this is not really the point. When I?ve listened to an audio book, I tend to say I?ve listened to it rather than read it, but I?ve heard others say they?ve read a book they?ve listened to. Definitions aside, the question is, does listening provide the same experience as reading the printed version? I would say not entirely, but the comparison does not necessarily favor the printed book. A lot depends on the narrator, of course, but a well told audio book can bring a book to life in a way ink simply cannot. In an interesting way, the new technology that makes listening to a book possible actually harkens back to the very old tradition of storytelling, which predates the written word by millenia.

As I see it, certain kinds of books favor the printed version, others the audio. Some authors, such as Jack Keruoac, seem at their most natural when you can hear them spoken out loud.
On the other hand, books that require a lot of, shall we say left-brained concentration, are more written-word friendly. Sometimes it depends on the listener. For instance, I enjoy reading Russian novels, but I would not attempt to listen to Tolstoy or Dostoyevskly. I find all the unfamiliar names to be too much of a challenge, and the printed page allows me to take my time and, when necessary, go back and verify who is who. On the other hand, someone whose native language is Russian (or a scholar in the field), would have no problem listening. The same is true for non-fiction. If the field is very obscure to me, listening to it would probably mean missing key points. If it?s something I?m comfortable with, however, this would not be the case.

Narrating an audio book is a subtle art. If you listen to enough books, you will start to recognize the very skillful pros who have narrated hundreds, such as George Guidall. The trick, as far as I can tell (in addition to having a good, clear voice, of course), is to put just the right amount of inflection into the reading. It also requires the skill to do different voices, which is no easy matter in a novel full of male and female characters of varying age, background, geographical origin and education. A few audio books have tried the format of using multiple narrators. While this sounds like a good idea in theory, in practice I find it to be a distraction. The most glaring mistake made by narrators that I?ve listened to is overacting. Narrators should not, as a rule, be acting at all. If they put too much of their personalities into a reading, they are violating one of the primary virtues of books ?allowing the reader to reconstruct the book in his or her own imagination. If the narrator does this, thereby intruding on the reader?s mental boundaries, he is actually giving credence to the anti-audio book argument, transforming the book into more of a radio play (nothing wrong with these, they just are not books). Most publishers, however, find skillful narrators who do not overstep their bounds, but put just the right amount of inflection and emotion into the action and dialogue.

Audio books are convenient and pleasurable, but I think they are also one aspect of contemporary life that, as I suggested earlier, actually bring back some of the virtues of slower-paced, pre-modern cultures. You may use an audio book to distract you from tedious chores or a mundane day job (a situation, alas, in which I still often find myself) or from hundreds of miles of highway, but if you are listening to a good, well narrated book, you are getting something more than a mere distraction. You are participating in the time-honored (if updated to fit the information age) tradition of storytelling. This can serve as a refreshing addition, sometimes even a necessary antidote, to some of life?s everyday events.

    Angel Sales I Sight Light
Customer Review: Angel Sales I Sight Light

I was really disappointed in the quality of the Angel Sales I Sight Light. Granted, it only cost $12.95, but it only lasted one day. We were not rough on it and used it exactly the way it was meant to be used and yet it stopped working after a few uses. Don't waste your money.

    Customer Review: great concept but..

I bought 2 of these to try out, because one spot light usually creates too much shadows when you are reading, and with this product ,one is not bright enough for reading.

The biggest problem when trying to buy LED lights is that they don't specify the brightness of the light like other types of illumination products, there are no units of Watts, Lux or even mcd number for this unit, even on the package, all it says " Powerful Ultra-Bright white lifetime LED" no way to compare to other LEDs out there in the effective brightness. Although I quick search on the internet showed that these small 5mm LEDs come in brightness ranging from 800 to over 30,000 mcd (millicandles), You don't have to care about this if all you need is a task light to work under the sink, but if you want to do some precisiong work then this becomes essential info.

This unit is VERY bright if you use it to see in pitch dark places (one unit is bright enough) if you want to use this to read in the dark, you will probably be better off using 2 units together, one on each ear, this way you have more light, less shadow and your eyes don't get tired fast.

I actually bought these to work on some precise lab work; I thought they would be lighter than the Halogen Headlamp I am currently using,

2 problems; these LEDs are not bright at all if you have ambient light. And the biggest weakness of this product is the EAR Ring,

It is made of Hard Stiff THIN plastic which makes it very uncomfortable after a while. Which I hope they'll fix in the future.

Also it is hard to adjust where the beam falls.

All in all, Great Flash light replacement, Nice reading light.

    In the Valley of Elah

    In the Valley of Elah
In career Army officer Hank Deerfield's worldview, the American military exists to bring order to the world, and honor and dignity to every one of its soldiers. As played by Tommy Lee Jones, in a layered performance that will haunt the viewer long after the film is over, Deerfield wears the Army life like he does his standard-issue white T-shirts--unconsciously making a cheap motel bed with crisp inspection-ready corners. Yet if war is hell, the purgatory for the relatives of damaged soldiers can cause far more anguish, and Paul Haggis' quietly devastating In the Valley of Elah tells this story through Deerfield, who is desperately trying to piece together the fate of his adored son Mike, a soldier in Iraq.

Mike's company has returned from duty, but he is missing; Hank flies from Tennessee to Fort Rudd in the Southwest, to conduct his own investigation into the disappearance. There he meets a smart but put-upon police officer (Charlize Theron, glammed-down but still showing a bit too much sexy collarbone for a cop) who also smells something off in the Army's official story of the disappearance. The two form an unlikely team, but as a friend tells Deerfield early on, "You gotta trust somebody sometime, Hank," and Mike's vanishing is Hank's tipping point.

As Hank pieces together the horrifying story of Mike's fate, the incremental pain becomes etched in Jones' ragged features, and the camera captures all of it--far more powerfully than could a million words of reportage from the front lines. Theron's performance is also strong, and Susan Sarandon is moving if underutilized as Hank's grief-stricken wife, robbed of the simple nuclear family life she so wanted. "They shouldn't send heroes to places like Iraq," says one of Mike's buddies late in the film, and it's the viewers' collective sorrow--and the film's great achievement--to feel that at the deepest human level. --A.T. Hurley

Customer Review: Iraq War as cheap plot device for motive = not good

This movie really goes nowhere and uses Iraq induced PTSD as a cheap (as in no class) plot device to explain inhuman behavior. I'm not buying the screenplay or the insensitivity. The acting is 1st rate, but I have no idea why Jones or Theron would appear in this. The war and its effects is fair game for inspection... it just needs a truer more meaningfull vehicle. 2 stars is for the acting, otherwise just 1.

Customer Review: I'm giving it 3 stars - which is probably more than I actually liked it.

But it's a better movie all around than the completely uninvolving 'Rendition,' and MILES better than Haggis' wretched, terminally self-congratulatory, criminally overrated preachfest 'Crash.'

The performances are good enough, the cinematography is also good (but not remarkably so). The movie doesn't really have anything to tell us that anyone with half a brain hasn't already figured out - but at least it isn't painfully overt with its sermonizing (except perhaps for the idiotic bit with the flag at the end - I notice they didn't fly it that way on the artwork).

So I'll give it three stars and hope that Haggis learns to quit taking himself so seriously some day. Movies don't actually create change, and when film makers get the notion that they do it is both naive and concieted.

    The Halo Graphic Novel

    The Halo Graphic Novel
Marvel and Bungie team up to create The Halo Graphic Novel HC based on the best-selling video game. The graphic novel brings the Halo universe to life for the first time in the sequential art medium in a 128-page, full color, high quality, jacketed, hardcover graphic novel. Stories include: "Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor" by Simon Bisley and Lee Hammock. When communications from a Covenant agricultural support ship are mysteriously terminated, an Elite Commander and his squad of Special Forces are sent to investigate. In "Armor Testing" by Ed Lee and Jay Faerber, the only way to test Spartan armor, is to send a Spartan. The question is what's really being tested? In Tsutomo Nihei's "Breaking Quarantine," the untold tale of Sergeant Johnson's escape from the clutches of the Flood menace is revealed! Finally, Moebius and Brett Lewis' "Second Sunrise Over New Mombasa" tells of the subtler, more dangerous fights taking place on the streets of New Mombasa and in the hearts and minds of men. Cover by Phil Hale. Gallery art created a number of elite artists including Rick Berry, Geof Darrow, Scott Fischer, Sterling Hundley, Craig Mullins, George Pratt, Juan Ramirez, George Staples, Justin Sweet, John Van Fleet and Kent Williams.

Customer Review: Halo idelism in cognitive junctures of corbalitive conclusions

From an outsider's standpoint looking in, they say one should never judge a book by it's cover but I will do as such nonpussed because the dynamics of the combative format is such that of such exclusite artful review that need I say more??

    Customer Review: Disappointing

As a hardcore Halo fan, this is just downright disappointing. None of the stories follow Master Cheif, or Captain Keyes, or anyone remotely recognizable from the Halo universe except Sergeant Avery Johnson. The story with Sergeant Johnson is the only one worth viewing. This is an ok gift idea for someone you know who enjoys all things Halo, but if you really wanna get them something of value, go with one of the real novels instead.
