Self-help Books Are Popular Reading

There are many common mental problems that can plague our every day lives, making us unhappy and sick. Worry, stress, anger, fear, depression, insomnia, self-doubt, nervousness are some of the worse. Since each day lost to these ills cannot be replaced, we ought to be doing something about it.

While we should always consult a medical professional when we have physical or mental problems, there are often many ways that we can help ourselves to a better life.

In the area of self-help there is much to draw upon when looking for ways to improve our lives. Many ideas have been written by great thinkers of the past and best-selling authors of today. Often words written two thousand years ago are more effective than words written today, perhaps because they have withstood the test of time.

These ideas are easy enough to understand, but more difficult to practice. But it just takes practice. A good place to start is the self-help or self-improvement section of your public library or bookstore. If you think that this is an odd place in which to be seen, think again. There are very many big selling self-help titles to choose from. These books are popular reading.

Start with the most popular books on various self-help topics. Reread the better ones, highlight the best phrases, and take notes. Set aside fifteen minutes a day to help make good thinking and happy, satisfied feelings a way of life. It could be the best time investment you ever made.

Customer Review: Auto shut off is annoying

Seems reliable, quiet, and fast enough... but i really don't like the auto shut off feature. If you don't use it for 10 minutues it shuts down. When you try to access a file from it again, it goes back on. I could be working on a file, step away for a minute, then come back to it and save... and then it has to spin up again just to save. This takes a few seconds every time this happens, which slows me down.

Also... I am unsure of the longevity of an electronic item which is constantly going on and off. In any electronic device, a surge is sent through the device when powering up. We all know that this process of starting up is what wears electronics out, and decreases their life.

So.... if there is someone out there that knows how to turn this feature off... please let me know. I would love it if without auto shut off.

Customer Review: Great price for the amount of storage.

This is the second Western Digital HD that I purchased and I am very happy with the ease and speed of transfers.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns
After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Customer Review: Lightning Strikes Twice

After finishing The Kite Runner, I yearned for more. But when I saw A Thousand Splendid Suns and read the jacket, I feared that Hosseini had merely re-dressed his first novel, literally. While the two share the author's authentic style, they could not differ any more. While The Kite Runner focused on two male childhood friends, this one delved more into the intertwining of two women's lives due to the religious aspects of the Muslim culture while forcing the reader to face the misogynistic tendencies. Hosseini not only entertains us with another page turner, but educates as well, about a world that remains a secret to most of us. Thousands have read this insightful work; now that we have, to whom will we abdicate our knowledge of what we have learned?

Customer Review: Great without being addictive

Like "Kite Runner," this novel deals with love and hope in the face of fear, desperation, sadness and loss. Hosseini crafts characters which are genuine and complex behind a facade of simplicity, and I found I could identify with some part or portion of almost all of them. The story really drains you by spanning generations and lifetimes. In this way, it made me feel like I had gone on the journey with these two women, and had been beaten down and raised up emotionally alongside them.

The story and characters definitely kept me intrigued, but I didn't feel that addictiveness I feel with really fantastic books. I didn't get that sense that I had to be late to work or stay up late into the night to finish another chapter, and I think that says something about the novel: that while it is definitely an incredible story, something about it lacked urgency. Maybe that's simply because it did span so many years, I felt like I had a whole lifetime to read it.

Still, Hosseini has crafted a remarkable story and I look forward to what he comes up with next.

Customer Review: Making a proper mai tai

I make it a point of ordering mai tais anywhere I go and after learning how to make a proper mai tai from Jeff Berry's Grog Log, I am usually disappointed and have had some really bad ones except Trader Vic's original Mai Tai(You have to ask for the original).

Heres a tip. Buy this set of books, make your drinks and put your local hangouts drinks to shame by challenging them to a Mai Tai Throwdown like I have.

Thanks Jeff for bringing back the lost art of tropical drinks.

One Chance

One Chance
Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts has spent most of his life feeling 'insignificant'. Bullied at school for being 'different', he realized growing up that he had one true friend and that was his voice. Singing was his escape. He was able to lose himself in his own little world - the vicious words of his tormentors replaced by hauntingly beautiful lyrics and melodies that lifted his heart and spirit. It was a love, a passion, a lifeline that would follow Paul into adulthood and help him through many more periods of adversity.

Though it's fair to say that when Paul strolled awkwardly - almost apologetically - onto the Cardiff stage for his first Britain's Got Talent audition a week before that final, in his now infamous £35 Tesco suit, and announced to Simon and fellow judges Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan that he was going to sing opera, they never thought for one minute they were looking at their winner. Until he opened his mouth and started to sing.

Customer Review: last chance-the best chance

whatever stressed you out, listening to "last Chance" melts it all away, what a voice, wow...

Customer Review: Paul Potts is beyond a winner

The musical beauty of this CD by Paul Potts will send positive chills down your spine and out through your limbs. His voice is magnetic and moves the soul no matter what language he is singing. A must have for your tenor music collection and a moving story of success behind the music. He is the new "Pavarotti" with even more sentiment in his presentation.

Riverdance - The Show

Riverdance - The Show
Riverdance--The Show is a cultural phenomenon that defies criticism for the enthusiastic and leaves everyone else scratching their heads. The wonderfully talented cast, headed by the Riverdance Irish Dance Company, bewitchingly spins (and stomps) its Celtic folk choreography featuring numerous breathless solos by Michael Flatley (since departed) and Jean Butler. The mellifluous Riverdance Orchestra boasts Davy Spillane, who coaxes plaintive lamentations out of a peculiar instrument that resembles a bagpipe in a metal leg brace. For Enya fans, there is the sound-alike choral group Anuna, who casts a similarly New Age-style vocal spell. Also thrown into the mix are such disparate folk traditions as American gospel and Spanish flamenco. Though it's only 70 minutes long, Riverdance is repetitive by half. But judging from the ecstatic audience ovations and the continued foot-stomping during and after the curtain calls, too much is still not enough. --Richard Natale

Customer Review: Asleep At The Wheel

Recorded at The Point in Dublin - THE ORIGINAL staging after the incredible response to the Eurovision performance when Ireland was the host country. Even includes Michael Flatley and Jean Butler from the Eurovision performance. This is where it all started. Good enough for VHS, but where is the DVD?

Customer Review: Compromises? Not In My View.

I did a fair amount of soul-searching before pulling the trigger on this purchase, in large part because of all the "compromises" apparently required to make as thin as this one is. For me, the MBA replaced a ThinkPad T-40, which has been as sturdy, consistent, and feature-laden as it is unattractive. My worry was that, though I was sure I would like the size and appearance of the MBA, maybe I would miss the T-40's feature set. Worse, I might miss a particular feature while traveling. So, I almost didn't buy the MBA.

I needn't have worried -- the MBA is simply incredible. As others have mentioned, the case is quite sturdy. Apple's engineers ingeniously relied on some of the internal components themselves as part of the skeleton for the case. This sounds scary, except that they were designed to serve both functions. The keyboard is crisp and comfortable (and keep in mind that I'm coming from a very well-regarded keyboard in the ThinkPad). The trackpad gestures more than make up for all of the extra keys the ThinkPad has. Although it takes some getting used to, the three-finger swipe, the two finger "right-click", pinching/expanding, etc., are all intuitive, comfortable, and fairly addictive. I've even started missing them on my desktop. The screen is really impressive -- a *big* improvement from my previous laptop. And battery life has been just fine -- definitely not the advertised five hours, but consistently well over three.

What do I miss? Honestly, not much. I've started using downloaded movies when I travel, including iTunes rentals. They all look just as good as a DVD did (on a laptop, at least) and are better for battery life. When I use an external mouse, I use a Bluetooth wireless model, so it doesn't take up the USB port. I was never a battery-swapper anyway, so that's not an issue. (I'll probably gripe about the built-in battery every couple of years when I replace it, then forget it the rest of the time.) And I can't save everything I have on the hard drive, though it holds everything that I would ever need on-the-go. I don't even miss the Ethernet port, as I travel with an Airport Express, and have for years. For me, the only real downside is the speed of opening applications. Opening most apps is noticeably and annoyingly slower than with my desktop (or, presumably, than all of the other Apple notebooks). However, once open, they do just fine. I now leave them open, which Apple says is fine, and speed is more than adequate.

As a disclaimer, I should mention that I'm a lawyer, so my usage doesn't involve heavy graphic or media work. I tend to run the Microsoft Office suite, Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, watch movies, and use the internet. For those types of things, the MBA comfortably meets my needs. I've even added VM Ware's Fusion program (running Windows XP) and, once loaded, it does the job as well. A speed demon this computer isn't, but if you use general productivity software and Apple's consumer applications, you'll probably be very happy.

Customer Review: Great companion laptop

I have been looking for a computer to write with, going through a few different computers before finally settling on this one. The pluses and minuses have been covered well by all the great reviews here.

The computer itself is fantastic. What it lacks in ports, drives, battery life, etc it makes up for in quality bones. The screen is easily the best screen on any Mac laptop (this is something of a lottery though, and some airs are given better screens then others), and the build quality is also the best of any mac laptop imo. It feels sturdy in your hands, and the weight is just right.

Multitouch allows you to stop using the trackpad button altogether (and you'll never miss the 2nd button again). The keyboard backlight is very bright if needed, and is especially effective with the black keys. I use it with a network desktop/server so disk space doesn't matter to me. Also, I like the 1.6 b/c it's noticeably cooler than the 1.8 and the fans seem to run several hundred rpms lower on avg.

Overall, this is a good second computer. A LOT of people have had problems with their macbook airs, esp fan/heat issues. Proceed with caution, and assume there is a good chance you will need to exchange it (perhaps multiple times as some people have had to do). If you are willing to risk those issues, the potential reward can be worth it. It is a pleasure to use in bed w/ the lights out.

Customer Review: Great!

It is a great product. I mostly use it to back up information. I even used it to back up my videogame data from my Playstation3.

Customer Review: It died a week after the warranty expired

My WD 500Gb "Premium Edition" just died a week after the warranty expired. This hard drive has been a piece of junk since day one, all I have now is piece of garbage that makes annoying clicks when you turn it on; boy you talk about trowing $$$.$$ down the drain. DO NOT waste your money on any of these external drives made by Western Digital.

What else can I say? This cookbook holder does the trick and keeps the food from getting on the pages while freeing up some counter space.

One Chance
